Top 100 VG Songs (Part 1 : 100-076)

As I mentioned before, I'm compiling a list of the top 100 video game songs of all time. For no particular reason, other than to show myself exactly how much game music has inspired Zuraith music. There is a limit of 2 songs maximum per title, but that goes for each series. For example, there are more than 2 Zelda songs, but a maximum of 2 from each Zelda game. The list is done, and I'll be updating four times, 25 songs at once. I'll include Youtube links to all of the songs and a snippet of why it was chosen. Anywho, without further nonsense, part 1. Click the titles to listen to the songs.

Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4

[ 100 ] Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold " Main"
Blake Stone is a very old DOS game, and one of the original first person shooters. I chose this one to be on the list because of its effective simplicity. The backing chords clash intentionally, making an uneasy skeleton for the main jazzy riff. I also like the way it trips out near the end and throws you off guard.

[ 099 ] Modern Warfare 2 " DC Burning (Intropeak)"
This game is very recent, but I couldn't keep myself from putting this on the list. At this point in the game, you're coming up from an underground bunker to find out that you're in Washington DC, and it's destroyed. I actually stopped playing at this point, just to look and listen. Surreal.

[ 098 ] Pilot Wings "Hang Glider"
All emotional sentimental value aside, Pilot Wings was a great game, but the music was way too jazzy and pseudo-hip. Except for two, one of which is far too annoying to enjoy, then there's this one. Relaxing, calm, and enlightening.

[ 097 ] Eternal Champions "Xavier"
I hated this game. Truly. I had to play it with my cousins because they were Sega kids, where I was a Nintendo kid. However, even at such a young age (actually, as long as I can remember) I managed to listen to game music more than I actually played. This specific song used to creep me out, and re-listening to it, I can see why.

[ 096 ] Yoshi's Story "Main"
Yes, this game is geared toward very young gamers, and yes, this theme song shouldn't be enjoyed by anyone with a two-digit age, but I love it. I can't hear it without smiling, or at least wanting to.

[ 095 ] Aerofighters Assault "Main"
This game was %&$*ing hard! I never beat the second mission, resulting in hearing this theme song more than anyone should. I was originally excited by the N64's attempt at distorted electric guitars, and this was the first time I heard that. Extremely repetitive, because it's a loop, but for the first 20 seconds or so, it's metal.

[ 094 ] Wave Race 64 "Title"
I never owned this game, but the aforementioned cousins did. They bought a Nintendo 64 after the Genesis (you know, when Sega died?). Eat it, Sega kids! Anywho, this theme song gets stuck in your head like a bad memory, but it's actually pretty cool. Again with the crunchy guitars.

[ 093 ] Banjo-Kazooie "Mumbo's Mountain"
It's extremely silly and looney-toon-esque, but it sticks with you, and it's very well composed. The music from this game achieves its goal and attracts the audience it was meant to attract. This song is an example of that efectiveness.

[ 092 ] Zelda II : The Adventure of Link "Dungeon"
A classic. I always tell myself that I'm going to cover this song, because a heavy metal version would be amazing. It's very complex but still maintains that memorable melody. If you've never played Zelda II but you recognize it, the song was re-written and used for Super Smash Bros. Melee.

[ 091 ] Sonic: The Hedgehog "Green Hill Zone"
Sega gets a point here, because this song is awesome. It stays with you. It's happy, uplifting, and still upbeat enough to keep you going (hear that golden ring sound yet?). Again with the aforementioned cousins, I never wanted to play the game, because I knew that if they played it, since they sucked, they'd be on the same level for 15 minutes, thus playing this awesome song endlessly.

[ 090 ] Super Spike V'Ball "Daytona"
This is a very obscure game; nobody I've ever asked has heard of it. However, my dad and I used to play this game as often as Contra (daily). It's astonishing how much variety can come out of 8-bit sounds, but this song is a great example of those capabilities.

[ 089 ] Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker "Dragon Roost Island"
I've played every Zelda game to date, and this is the ONLY one that I don't like. However, since Koji Kondo is a freakin' musical genius, it's loaded with great music. This happens to be my favorite from the game.

[ 088 ] Bomberman Hero "Fatidic"
Amongst an array of techno-happy beeps and whistles, this song stands alone in Bomberman Hero. It reminds me of a creepy Egyptian deal, and that's probably why I like it so much. It's very simple and loops, but it's effectively composed and sets the mood in-game.

[ 087 ] Donkey Kong Country "Aquatic Ambience"
The title of this song couldn't be more fitting. Even if I had never played the game, I could tell you this was an underwater level. It has that "bubbly" tone. The reason I like this one so much is because of its New Age composition; it's relaxing, but well-composed and attention-holding.

[ 086 ] Metroid "Brinstar"
After the world's creepiest intro music, this song caught me off guard. It's very triumphant and heroic. The theme reminds you that you're a hero and what you're doing is important (that is, killing aliens. Not tapping the B button).

[ 085 ] Descent II "Title"
This song PUNCHES YOU IN THE FACE. It's like "This is Descent II, and if you forget it, I'll kick your ass". This is the most metal video game theme I've ever heard. It even has a scary choir to darken it. My only criticism is that I'm left wondering what happens next! It's so powerful, but it's too damn short. If this were turned into a full song (and not lazily with a copy & paste "composition"), it would have no opponents left.

[ 084 ] Duke Nukem 3D "Ah, Geez!"
This reminds me of a Tim Burton villian's theme, composed by Danny Elfman. There is a cheat code in-game that allows you to switch the background music track, while playing. This was one of the two tracks I ALWAYS kept the game on. I can't get enough of it.

[ 083 ] Doom 64 "Endgame"
When I heard that they were making a Doom for Nintendo 64, I didn't want anything else. It still has the coolest graphics from any Doom game (it even schools Doom 3), but 96% of the music is just non-melodic ambiance, which was saddening. However, the intro and endgame themes both rocked. Here's the Endgame.

[ 082 ] Mega Man 4 "Skull Man"
In my opinion, this song was a masterpiece when you consider the rest of the NES's soundtracks. Yes, it's a short loop, but so is everything you listen to on the radio. It's upbeat and has a very catchy melody.

[ 081 ] Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles "Kaze No Ne"
It's always cool when video games contain live instruments and vocals. I have no idea what this woman is saying, but it doesn't matter. Her voice is soothing and the music is catchy. There is an English version out there (strangely, it wasn't on the English game...), but I think it takes away from the song if you're listening to the lyrics. It makes me want to play bongos. And find out if that's a bagpipe halfway through.

[ 080 ] Runescape "Autumn Voyage"
I know that everyone and their brothers hate Runescape, or secretly love it and ACT as if they hate it, but all hate aside, it has some friggin' cool music. This is my favorite tune from the game.

[ 079 ] Abadox "Stage 1"
I love this song. It's kind of spacey and 'galactic', but the game is a space shooter. It's well written and unpredictable (at least until it loops a few times), making it a progressive work of art.

[ 078 ] Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind "Title"
A mystical song for a mystical game. Epic and successful, the Morrowind theme is unforgettable and timeless. It's also the perfect song for a legendary movie or game trailer.

[ 077 ] Doom II "The Demon's Dead"
Almost every Doom song follows the same progressive style, but somehow they all stand unique and satisfying on their own. If I had to pick only one series to listen to, it would definitely be Doom. But that's another discussion. This song is dark, memorable, and sticks with you. Unfortunately for me, I can't hear it without playing Map 10 through in my head.

[ 076 ] Starcraft "Zerg 1"
I was never any good at Starcraft, and when I did play I was Protoss. However, when it comes to music, the Zerg steal the show. It's industrial, atmospheric, and really gets you in the mood to rush oblivious enemies with Zerglings. It's also long and epic, eliminating the need for loops.
