Top 100 VG Songs (Part 3 : 050-026)

Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4

[ 050 ] Xenogears "The One Who is Torn Apart"
I've yet to have the opportunity to play through Xenogears, but I have heard the full OST. This is by far my favorite; it's haunting and provides that effect of wonder and mystery, but it's very simplistic in doing so.

[ 049 ] Mega Man 6 "Mr. X Stage"
Mega Man 6 was the finale of the series for the NES, and came close to beating MM2 with its soundtrack. This is the prime pick from the game. It's super nostalgic for me personally, but nevertheless the melody is awesome and, minus the 8-bit limit, it's very nicely written.

[ 048 ] Brave Fencer Musashi "The Musashi Legend"
This game was one of my biggest youth frustrations. I can't remember exactly how many times I got stuck, but it was too damn often. Soundtrack wise, the music from this game repeated the same themes more often than any other game I can recall, but it did so effectively, to kind of unite all of the sub-worlds and events into one cluster. This song specifically pretty much sums up the game.

[ 047 ] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past "Hyrule Castle"
I don't need to tell you how big of a hit this game was, unless you live in a box. Hyrule Castle, at first anyway, was the initial, dark adventure in the story, when you have to march through a rainstorm and come up through sewers just to get in. I've always loved this song, much more than any of its remakes (especially the Twilight Princess remake).

[ 046 ] Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask "Clock Tower"
Two Zelda songs back to back?! Hey, I can't help that Koji Kondo is a musical genius. Majora's Mask was by far the darkest, scariest of the Zelda games, and its real-time apocalypse kept you on the edge of your seat. This song is kind of the break in the darkness, as it's both the theme for the Clock Tower (which houses the Happy Mask Salesman, the creepiest person ever), and the Song of Healing, which stores curses in masks and rids the afflicted of their pain. It's pretty.

[ 045 ] Aion "Main Theme"
This song is hypnotic. As soon as it starts, my brain tells me to stop doing whatever I'm doing and play Aion. If only my brain knew my wallet. It starts off super epic and then goes all... I don't know what to call it. Definitely different and unique, but keeps my attention the whole way through. If you like this song, give this acappella version a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPmiR7oz7HA

[ 044 ] Mace: The Dark Age "Asmodeus"
If you can get past the horrible attempt at a digital choir, this song is badass. Mace was both an arcade game and a port to the Nintendo 64. The final fight is this ophidian named Asmodeus, and this music plays through the whole fight. It's epic and gets you in the mood to kick demon ass. For the first ten minutes. The fight is extremely long, and if you manage to survive it, I'll admit this loop gets old pretty quickly. Nonetheless, awesome track.

[ 043 ] Mario Kart 64 "Rainbow Road"
I lost my copy of this game, someone donate a copy! But seriously, I love this song. The first word that comes to mind is "emotional". It's a very happy song, but at the same time it's a very sad and melancholic song. Songs that mix happiness and sadness have a way with me, because it's like the ultimate emotional combo, and it grabs you and squeezes until you love it. That was a bit of a description... Anywho, this song is brilliant, and anyone who owns this game can tell you that this song was stuck in their head after hearing it.

[ 042 ] Diablo "Tristram"
I think this song owns for two reasons. First, it's gorgeously frightening. It's like something beautiful wearing a scary mask. It's peaceful, but at the same time you get that eerie bone chill, especially when the creepy howls come in. Second, I have a deep personal connection with this song. After first hearing it, I decided that Diablo was a horrible game and that its sole purpose was to give me nightmares. A couple years later, I burned this song to a CD so I could listen to it at school.

[ 041 ] Doom "Sinister"
This song, like most Doom songs, is an endless loop, but it's impossible to get tired of it. It's spooky in itself, but the drum beat keeps you going and adds that signature Doom rock element. Bobby Prince was a midi master (err... ".mus" master), and I wish he was still an active composer today.

[ 040 ] Castlevania: Symphony of the Night "Dracula's Castle"
I never understood why Castlevania games continuously used upbeat songs for the final castle levels, but I guess it was because most people playing didn't give a damn. Symphony of the Night was, in my opinion, the best of the Castlevania series, and the soundtrack reaps the same reward. I especially like the guitars of the OST; whether they're real or not, they sound metal enough to deliver their purpose.

[ 039 ] Descent II "Are You Descent"
I used to listen to this soundtrack at school. The actual game disc was also playable in a CD player, so you didn't have to buy anything. This particular song gets brilliant a little before 2 minutes in, where it turns into a rising, epic scale, then returns to the techno metal. You can headbang to it quite nicely.

[ 038 ] Star Fox "Corneria"
That main melody (the one played with the orchestral hit sound) is so appealing. It's simple and you know it's coming, but it's awesome. If you can't jam to this, you probably can't jam to anything else on this list.

[ 037 ] Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask "Ikana Castle"
When this song first played, I thought that I had already made it to the final level of the game, just because it's so doomcalling and benighted. It makes you feel like you're about to enter something you won't have an easy time with, like your certain death is dead ahead.

[ 036 ] FlyFF "Darkon"
FlyFF is a free online multiplayer RPG. This song was among the soundtrack that you're provided when you download the client, and it's the battle theme for the Darkon area of the game. Unfortunately, updated versions of FlyFF have done away with battle themes altogether, probably because it's a grindfest and people got sick of them. But I love this song, let it rest in peace.

[ 035 ] Contra "Snowfield"
Another NES loop for the list. This game was a big part of my childhood (it would still be played if I still had it), and this song is the one that lingered in your brain afterwards. I can almost hear the 8-bit bombs exploding from behind the trees.

[ 034 ] Final Fantasy VIII "Liberi Fatali"
One of the most epic openings for a game, ever. Unfortunately, after the intro, it's kind of a downhill spiral. However, the intro itself is enough to win it a spot in my box of PSX games. Just listen to it! That was from the original Playstation!

[ 033 ] Super Metroid "Brinstar Jungle"
The best of the innovative Metroid series, Super Metroid game equipped with a soundtrack very polished from it's two previous siblings. The most memorable of these being the Jungle theme in Brinstar. So good.

[ 032 ] Final Fantasy IX "Danger in the Forest"
Since this isn't a forum, I can say that I think Final Fantasy IX is overrated (Don't believe me? Prove me wrong WITHOUT mentioning another Final Fantasy). However, that doesn't change the fact that Uematsu is still brilliant and composed a soundtrack on par with his expectations. This song is soothing.

[ 031 ] Golden Sun "Mars Lighthouse"
Who knew a handheld Gameboy Advance could pump a song so sweet? It's super complex, very originally composed, and the chords that smash in at the pace change are delicious. I'd love to hear this song played by a live band.

Now we're getting to the badasses. The top 30.

[ 030 ] Turok 2 : Seeds of Evil "Port of Adia"
The Turok games always kicked my ass. That being said, I heard this, the Map 1 music, a lot. It also helps to mention that the 5 levels in the game were EXTREMELY long, huge maps. Anyway, I never got tired of this song. I love the leads. Also, it's in 4/4, but it sounds like it switches from 7/8 to 9/8 each measure once the second part comes in. Beautiful.

[ 029 ] Secret of Mana "Rose and Ghost"
Secret of Mana is one of the kings of the SNES soundtrack box. Actually, it's one of the kings of the SNES. To think this came out of a 16-bit system... it flows so well, and it's so relaxing.

[ 028 ] World of Warcraft "Stormwind"
First of all, you get drilled in the face with a choir and the whole orchestra playing their instruments with as much power as possible, then it slows down to a soothing serenade, just to bring back the TAKE THAT choir. I love this song. For fellow WoW players who know what I'm talking about, Stormwind had my Hearthstone setting just because of this song.

[ 027 ] Blast Corps "Tempest City"
A very underrated game, Blast Corps was addictive as hell. This song is metal, and has some wonderfully rendered guitars. I love when the lead switches and the guitars slow down. It's so brutal. Then the orchestrations make it even darker. I love it.

[ 026 ] Halo 2 "Blow Me Away"
If you haven't heard it, go listen to it now. You might be like "damn that's good quality". Well, it's because Bungie got f@cking Breaking Benjamin to write and record it! It's rare that a game I'm already playing makes me want to...play it harder, but this song does just that. If you're a marine of sorts, and you have a plasma rifle, aliens are running toward you, and this starts playing, come on! BLOW THEM AWAY!
