Top 100 VG Songs (Part 4 : 025 - 001)

Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4

[ 025 ] Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time "Lost Woods"
If I had to pick one song that meant the most to me, I'd pick this one. But since I'm judging the top 100 on both composition and overall value, it's at number 25. It's so happy. It's iconic now, along with the game it's from. Spectacular.

[ 024 ] Mega Man II "Dr. Wily's Castle"
The soundtrack to Mega Man II was a prodigy of its time. For the NES, which consisted primarily of 20-30 second loops of music, this song was trampling. It's 74 seconds long before it loops. There are many redone versions of this that you should check out. It's such a good song...

[ 023 ] Body Harvest "Indoors"
Very X-files like. I would consider Body Harvest one of the best N64 soundtracks, if it weren't for the fact that almost every song had some kind of descending reverberating piano. Either way, this song is gorgeous.

[ 022 ] Super C(ontra) "Level 1"
Even better than Dr. Wily's Castle, this is one of the most well-written NES tracks I've ever heard. It's a classic, and there's not much else to say. It's like telling someone why Smoke on the Water is cool. Unless you hate Deep Purple. Like a Communist.

[ 021 ] Duke Nukem 3D "Aliens, Better Say Your Prayers"
I don't know the correct name for this tune, I always thought it was just "Aliens". Oh well. This list is getting to the point where you need to just listen to the songs, because they're almost beyond words. Why is this song awesome? Listen to it!

[ 020 ] Kirby 64 : The Crystal Shards "Snow Factory Investigation"
For a game entirely upbeat and clad with fairytale environments, this song and setting come out of nowhere. Suddenly you're in a modern factory, and the music isn't so sweet. It reminds me of human consumption, really, but I don't know if the producers were that deep.

[ 019 ] Super Mario 64 "Bowser in the Dark World"
Where did this come from? This is like the factory theme in Kirby 64- a black rose among a garden of bright colors. Only, instead of mirroring humanity's destruction of the planet, you're magically on an LSD trip in a floating world.

[ 018 ] Halloween Harry "Intro"
This game was also one of my childhood addictions. It was a game for Windows 3.1, and was later released in the 2000's under the title "Alien Carnage", but that version has been defiled. Find the original. I have it on a floppy. Anywho, this theme is scrumptious. See, I'm trying not to recycle adjectives.

[ 017 ] Perfect Dark "Pelagic II"
I can obliterate you at Perfect Dark. Now that's out of the way. Every song in this game is dark and techno-like. It was very hard to limit myself to two (yes, two made the list this high), but I succeeded. If you like it, listen to my version. I remade it: http://www.zuraith.com/Two%20Bullets2.mp3

[ 016 ] Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess "Blizzeta, Form 1"
I'm 90% sure Koji Kondo was listening to "This is Halloween" by Danny Elfman when he was writing this. The two are strikingly similar. Either way, this song is chilling (that's a pun, because it's played at the ice boss- now I feel lame) and dark. Two of the best adjectives available for music.

[ 015 ] Doom "Victory"
Remember when I said the songs are getting too good for words, and that you have to just listen to it to know what I mean? This is one of them. Go. Shoo. Listen.

[ 014 ] Alien 3 "Level 1 & 2"
Here we have the #1 NES song of all time. I've ripped off this song so much throughout my songwriting history. I even used it as a direct reference for an old band called Into The Frost, for one of our metal songs. It's wonderful. The scales used in this song have been embedded into my brain. Of course, on the actual game, the "percussion" wasn't as dominant as in the YouTube track linked above.

[ 013 ] Legend of Dragoon "If You Still Believe"
Holy crap vocals! In English! But in all seriousness, this is my favorite video game intro. The song is overwhelming, and (at the time) the visuals were stunning. Legend of Dragoon is so underrated that it actually bothers me. I want to throw it at people who claim Final Fantasy to be the only good PSX RPG series. This song is gorgeous.

[ 012 ] Goldenye 007 "Antenna Cradle"
Hell yeah! That traitor has it coming! This music sets the mood perfectly for that last gunfight. They even manage to fit in the 007 theme song. The piano is so badass. It gives the song its life. Gah! This whole thing is just awesome. Listen to it!

[ 011 ] Halo "Halo"
FPS gamers around the world know this song like the back of their hand. The song has been re-made several times, but I still think the original is by far the best. Halo 2 had a "metal" version, but it was far from metal. There was just a lead guitar solo added. If this song was properly made metal, it would own. Anyway, it's now classic, go hear it.

[ 010 ] Chrono Cross "Scars of Time"
I wish I could compose this way. Have something so soothing and epic that it paints a damn movie in your head even if you have no idea what it's from. It just takes you in and pummels you with awesome.

[ 009 ] Super Mario 64 "Credits"
Have you ever built up an emotional connection with a song? Maybe you heard something when you were going through a rough time in life. Or maybe you can personally related to something. Well, this song has more nostalgic, melancholic value to me than anything else, and it's the ONLY song capable of almost bringing me to tears. Therefore, I don't really know if that link plays the whole song, I'm kind of afraid to check. Anyway, it's such a happy and simultaneously sad song...

[ 008 ] Jet Force Gemini "SS Anubis"
It was insanely difficult to keep this out of the top 5. It's truly a masterpiece in composition. It keeps you waiting for the climax, but when you get there, it's well worth it. Soft and spooky, then loud and emotional. Complete win.

[ 007 ] Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time "Ganon"
This is what it means to compose an emotional melody. It's effective because it's gloomy, it's upbeat because it's the final battle, it has an "oh shit" intro, and still it fits a feeling of despair in the notes.

[ 006 ] Enclave (Xbox version) "End Credits"
This song comes out of nowhere, and it hits hard. Beautiful. It combines many musical genres, and does so effectively. I specified the Xbox version because the PC version did not contain this song.

On to the final five...
